CIA  has been under fire by critics who object to secret prisons and harsh interrogation practices
it has adopted since the Sept. 11 attacks. Some of those critics suggested  the release of the historic documents
was intended to distract attention from the agencies’ current controversies.

"But it’s uncanny how the government keeps dipping into the black bag." Newly revealed details of ancient CIA operations, Blanton said, "are pretty resonant today."
